Time Warp

Witteveenplein is the centerpiece of the Stadstuinen neighborhood in Rotterdam-Zuid. In 2003, the square was designed as a park, including space for an artwork. Artist duo Driessens & Verstappen, together with Arnoud Holleman, proposed to document the growth process of the young trees over a period of twenty years. This was roughly the time the young planting would need to reach maturity. The artists took a leap into the future by planting a mature tree in the middle of the square. The young trees were meant to slowly grow toward it. Unfortunately, the mature tree did not survive, but the documentation continued. For twenty years, they took a few photographs each year from fixed vantage points, which became part of stop-motion films. While the focus was on the growth of the trees, you also began to see how neighborhood residents made the square their own.

In 2023, as agreed, the artists ceased their documentation. To conclude Time Warp, the website address WWW.WITTEVEENPLEIN.COM was carved into one of the large boulders on the square as a permanent marker. The film plays on the site. In five minutes, you travel twenty years back in time to the moment of construction, when everything was still malleable. What began as a leap into the future has now become a memory.
